Veterinary Nurse Jobs - Do You Have What It Takes?

It is actually a terrible misconception that veterinary nursing is the simplest kind of nursing. In fact, it is as difficult as human nursing, if not more. The problem is compounded because you cannot communicate with animals like you can do with humans. You have to restrain animals as they are being treated, and have to second-guess their condition several times and treat them symptomatically. Today, several people are thinking of taking up veterinary nurse jobs since there is good money in it, but it is important to make an initial assessment of one's own capabilities before taking up the job.

A veterinary nurse needs to be extremely compassionate with animals. It simply won't do if the nurse doesn't care for the animals at all. The first qualification to be a veterinary nurse is that the nurse must be an animal lover. But, at the same time, there must be a fair degree of firmness with the animals. If the nurse feels queasy about applying a syringe on an adorable kitten's paw, then it's not worth it at all. The veterinary nurse must bear in mind that the syringe is for the betterment of the animal. This is just an example, but it gives a fair idea how the attitude of the nurse must be towards the animals being treated.

Secondly, veterinary nursing jobs are extremely hectic. Vet nurses must assist the veterinarians in all their tasks, right from the consultation stage to the examination, treatment, surgery and also post-operative care. That means, the vet nurse's duty is quantitatively longer than that of the veterinarian doctors and surgeons. In addition, vet nurses could also have to double up as receptions and attend calls, make appointments, etc. They are also supposed to maintain treatment records of the animals and give them their medications as per the guidelines of the doctors. All in all, there might not be a moment's respite for a person who enters into a veterinary nursing job.

Then there are some qualities required, which are also required of all nursing professions.

  • Vet nurses must be good in communication skills, because most of the times they will be the ones coordinating with the pet owners.
  • Vet nurses must be good at organization, since they will have to synchronize treatment schedules for the various animals.
  • Vet nurses must be able to work as part of a team, since most vet clinics are busy places with several nurses working together.

Bearing all these things in mind, you must take the decision whether you want to be a vet nurse or not. The pay is good, and the hours are less, but they are certainly packed with several responsibilities. Finally, it is you who has to decide whether to take up this grand responsibility or not.
